Two factors attracted Robert Lindenberg, MD to northwest Connecticut as he was completing his fellowship at NYU and preparing to begin what would become an accomplished career in gastroenterology. The first being the glaring need for gastroenterology physicians and services in the region.

“We wanted to bring healthcare close to home, so patients didn’t need to seek GI care elsewhere,” recalls Dr. Lindenberg, a retired gastroenterologist, current member of the Hartford HealthCare Northwest Region Board of Directors, Chairman of the Board’s Credentialing Committee, and active Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Corporator. “Over the years, we were able to keep GI care in the local community and advance our capabilities far beyond what was originally here.”

In addition to enhancing healthcare access in Litchfield County, Dr. Lindenberg was also attracted to the welcoming nature of the community he would subsequently serve for over four decades.

“Since retiring, what I miss most are the relationships I had with my patients and colleagues,” shares Dr. Lindenberg. “I always felt like these are my people, and I made a point to spend time with my patients and learn about their families—that always meant a lot to them.

“Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is a big family and it was very special to me,” he continues. “It has always been a true community hospital—and Hartford HealthCare is working diligently to retain that culture, while also enhancing patient care and safety.”

Thanks to his experience, his belief in the hospital’s vision and importance, and his love for the community, Dr. Lindenberg declared his intention to include Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in his legacy—making him one of the inaugural members of the newly created 1916 Society.

The 1916 Society was established to recognize donors who are planning gifts today that will provide significant benefits in the future for everyone in the hospital’s care. There are several ways to participate in the 1916 Society, including a bequest in your will, beneficiary designations, appreciated securities, and life income plans. The society will host its first annual meeting and induct its inaugural class on September 19, 2024.

“I believe that I gave as much as I could through expertise and compassionate care, but it was also important to me to give back in this fashion,” shares Dr. Lindenberg. ‘It has been a very special relationship for me and this is how I want to show my appreciation.”

“Dr. Lindenberg has given so much to our hospital and this region throughout his distinguished career and we are so thankful that he has chosen to invest in Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s future,” said Debbie Bender, Director of Philanthropy, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. “Our 1916 Society members represent our hospital’s most devoted friends and we are eternally grateful for their philanthropic support.”
