After overseeing his New Hartford auto body shop for 35 years, John Spaziani didn’t just find a new way to pass the time in retirement; he discovered a way to make a difference.
“I always enjoyed woodworking and started playing around with that,” he shares. “I bought the tools I needed, made a workshop in my barn, and soon enough, I got into woodturning. That’s when I got really hooked.”
Turning is a specialized craft that involves shaping wood on a rotating spindle. Enthusiasts like John can subscribe to Woodturning Magazine, which is where he found inspiration to turn his hobby into helping others.
“I read other turners from around the country were creating wig holders for cancer patients who lost their hair during treatment,” he says. “I had cancer myself, and I know how hard it can be. No one around here was making them, so I did.”
Described as beautiful art pieces by Charlotte Hungerford Hospital colleagues, John’s creations offer more than function. To date, he has delivered 50 wig holders to the hospital’s cancer center.
“I just felt it was time to give back a little bit,” says John. “Hartford HealthCare is the best thing to happen to Torrington, and I think we live in a great time in terms of healthcare. Hartford HealthCare is doing a fantastic job; they are very forward-thinking.”

While he never wants to be paid for his work, he does hope his efforts will carry a different meaning for the people he helps.
“I would love for someone who received a wig holder to ask me to turn it into something else for them, like a jewelry holder,” he says. “That would mean they’re done with their cancer. That would feel good.”
“In addition to being a wonderful person, John provides a brilliant example of the many different and meaningful ways you can give back to your community and support Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s mission,” says Debbie Bender, Director of Philanthropy at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
“His craftsmanship provides our cancer center and patients with beautiful and inspiring artistry, and he is delivering hope and understanding to neighbors going through one of life’s greatest challenges. We are tremendously grateful to John for his creativity, generosity, and in-kind giving.”
