Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is grateful to the Crosswicks Foundation for their generous philanthropic support of the hospital’s Food4Health program and efforts to address food insecurity and diet-related illnesses in northwest Connecticut.

The Crosswicks Foundation was established by Hugh and Madeleine Franklin. Married in 1946, the accomplished couple raised their family in an old Goshen farmhouse they named “Crosswicks.” Madeleine, a Newberry Medal-winning author, and Hugh, a stage and television actor known for his role as Dr. Charles Tyler on All My Children, created the family foundation to help others and support the community.

Fifty years and four generations later, Hugh and Madeleine’s family sustain their philanthropic legacy by preserving the foundation’s mission and championing causes surrounding Crosswicks Farm and beyond.

According to Josephine Jones, Hugh and Madeleine’s daughter and a Crosswicks Foundation board member, giving back has always been important to her family. “Charlotte Hungerford is vitally important to the region, and I think the Food4Health program is brilliant,” shares Jones. “We hope to help grow the program, reach more people, and alleviate food insecurity.”

As a member of the hospital’s Philanthropic Advancement Committee, Jones enjoys a direct connection to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s ongoing philanthropic initiatives, including Food4Health, the Rural Residency Program, and the Center for Youth & Families.

“I am very interested in the Center for Youth & Families—they do wonderful work in helping children and their families,” she shares. “I loved meeting Dani the Therapy Dog and learning more about the Pet Therapy Program. I also appreciate the Rural Residency Program and its focus on psychiatry. I am hoping the program will help the region with physician wait times and enable patients to see a doctor quickly.”

“We are very grateful to the Crosswicks Foundation for their generous gift to our Food4Health program, their commitment to agriculture in the northwest region, and their desire to alleviate food insecurity amongst our patients,” shared Debbie Bender, Director of Philanthropy at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.

“Food4Health is providing local patients and families with greater access to nutritious foods and free expert guidance on healthy eating and food preparation,” she continued. “We are proud to be beneficiaries of the Crosswicks Foundation and thankful to have such an active member of the community, like Josephine Jones, on our Philanthropic Advancement Committee, as she helps us keep a pulse on the healthcare needs of our region.”
