Looking back to her transition from resident to attending physician in 2021, Abbie Saccary, MD, admits to feeling a bit intimidated at the time. According to the emergency medicine specialist, that feeling quickly subsided thanks to the immense support she received from her hospital colleagues.
“Charlotte Hungerford is such an awesome place,” shares Dr. Saccary. “It’s very supportive—the physicians, nurses, techs, leadership—they make my days easier and more enjoyable.”
Fast forward to today—just four years into her career—Dr. Saccary earned enough confidence and trust from her colleagues to be elected President of the Medical Staff, a role where she represents and advocates on behalf of her hospital peers. The position also provides direct connections to strategic and philanthropic initiatives designed to strengthen the hospital and fulfill Hartford HealthCare’s vision of enhancing patients’ access to care.
“It’s nice to see the vision for the future and help leadership communicate it to my colleagues,” she shares. “We are in a unique position, being in a rural population. We are intimately involved within the community and the closest healthcare access point for many people. With our Hartford HealthCare affiliation, patients can come to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and immediately link into a world-class healthcare system.”
In addition to serving the hospital through her medical expertise and leadership, Dr. Saccary also provides philanthropic support as a member of the 1916 Society—a recognized group of donors who made the generous decision to include Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in their estate plans.
“I wanted to invest in our hospital’s future because I can’t imagine this community without Charlotte Hungerford Hospital,” says Dr. Saccary. “I just feel you should always ask yourself what you can do to change or improve things in your immediate area, and you can really make an impact via philanthropy.”
“Someday you are going to need to dial those three numbers, and you want to make sure the team caring for you or your family has what they need to care for you,” she continues. “Investing in healthcare is important for both the community and the individual—it’s a benefit for all.”
“Dr. Abbie Saccary is an incredibly special member of our hospital family and shared community,” says Debbie Bender, Director of Philanthropy at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. “She has made the future of healthcare in the northwest corner brighter, thanks to her deep commitment to her colleagues and patients, as well as her generous philanthropic support of our mission and vision. We are very grateful for her leadership, friendship, and advocacy, and we’re proud to include her within our highly esteemed 1916 Society.”
